Getting To Know Huskies
Huskies are playful, loving, and kind. They are smart, emotive, and exuberant. They are very social and highly suitable for companionship, fitting well with kids and families. They do not, however, typically work well with cats or other small pets as they have a strong prey drive. Huskies are also intuitive, creative, and curious. Just like a furry kid, they are eager to learn and will actively engage with your daily social dynamics for stimulation and discovery. While they abhor being left alone, they will keep themselves busy if you give them something to do, especially something to chew on. Highly sensitive and aware, they love when you include them or give them activities of a playful or training nature to learn about or focus on. Scheduling play dates, walks with other dogs, day care, or a house sitter for your travels, can give them fresh new experiences they crave around your busy schedule. This keeps their wits engaged through healthy self-direction and lowers the risk of them finding something to do that’s less desirable.

They are a ‘working breed’ after all, and for them, work is play! And by play we mean running… Pulling a sled over dozens if not hundreds of miles in extreme or cold weather while pathfinding and making their own life-sustaining decisions is in their genes. So be sure to give them a large yard to run in, with a 5-6’ fence height, excellent food and chews to keep them focused, and plenty of walks, hikes, or social outings. Support their independence while keeping them safe. While it is true some have been successfully trained off leash, it is not typical of the breed and we don’t recommend it. They can get bored quickly and are eager to see what the wide world has to offer. Take them with you wherever you can and they’ll reward you with their happiness.
I believe Huskies are the canine version of ‘Cultural Creatives’: freedom lovers with an independent mind, a healthy self-will, curiosity and creativity. You will naturally earn their trust rather than just expect them to do what they’re told. They are a lot like kids. And they use their voice to communicate their thoughts and feelings. Huskies have a beautiful range of vocalizations, often called ‘talking’ when in response to you, and a gorgeous howl — the song of their breed! They are sensory beings with a high level of emotional attunement and as such clearly want to try new things and enjoy life’s varied experiences and environments, to meet new people, and other dogs. When training, they do best with clear positive directives, a healthy respect for their way of doing things, room for mutual growth, and lots of love and encouragement. Huskies shine when they can make win-win choices through autonomous learning, encouragement, and practice. Patience, Perspective, Persistence, and Positivity are your magic keys to a rewarding good relationship. Their world centers around shared adventures and a loving family or pack with whom to explore.

She has trained me with my 2 Shiba Inus, which I had prior to my husky adventure, and has trained me with all the huskies too. We just love her down to earth wisdom, patience, experience, and dog magic.

If you ever need a trusted local vet to come to you, we highly recommend Dr. Richard Wheeler of Poudre River Veterinary Clinic our of Ft Collins area. He is a top industry practitioner with 10+ years. He supports real-time education for new students in the field so he might bring along a student in training. When he offered to come out for Verité’s ultrasound, he didn’t charge extra for the home visit. All around a great experience.
With K-9 Smiles, you can keep up with your pet’s dental health without the anxiety or meds. They offer safe, affordable, preventative dental care, and anesthesia-free teeth cleanings. They have various locations, and even often offer a “pop-up” visit for teeth cleaning hosted in one of the local natural pet stores such as PC’s Pantry. Find out when they’ll be near you.

As a certified professional pet sitter who does it as her heart’s calling, we’ve found her experience, compassion, and trustability equal to our peace of mind.
